RECENT CONSENT DECREE EVENTS
September 27, 2024 The Department of Justice and the City of New Orleans filed a joint motion requesting that Judge Morgan permit the City and the NOPD to enter the “Sustainment Period” of compliance, as provided for in Consent Decree paragraph 491. That motion was accompanied by a proposed “Sustainment Plan,” which addresses specific Consent Decree requirements that require additional effort to achieve compliance, additional time for the Monitor to review, or both.
January 14, 2025 The Court granted the Joint Motion and the Sustainment Period began. At the same time, the Court denied a pending motion to terminate the Consent Decree. The City subsequently appealed the denial of the motion to terminate the Decree.
September 4, 2025 The City and the Department of Justice filed a Joint Motion for an “indictive ruling” from the Court on whether the Court would grant a joint motion to terminate the Consent Decree if the issue were remanded back to the court from the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.
October 9, 2025 Judge Morgan “indicated” that she would grant a joint motion to terminate the Consent Decree.
November 11, 2025 The City and the Department of Justice filed a Joint Motion to Terminate the Consent Decree.
November 19, 2025 The Court ruled on the parties’ joint motion to terminate the Consent Decreen granting the motion. This brings the Consent Decree to a successful conclusion. The Monitoring Team’s Final Report is available on the Reports and here.
